 Guru Shikhar, the highest peak of the Aravalli Range, is a significant historical and spiritual site located near Mount Abu in Rajasthan, India. Standing at an elevation of 1,722 meters (5,650 feet), it is not only known for its scenic beauty but also for its religious significance.

Historical Significance

Guru Shikhar translates to "the peak of the guru" and is named after the revered sage Guru Dattatreya, who is believed to have meditated on this peak. Dattatreya is a deity in Hinduism, often considered a combined incarnation of the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. The site has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries and holds great importance in Hindu mythology.

Temples and Spiritual Heritage

• Dattatreya Temple: The primary attraction at Guru Shikhar is the Dattatreya Temple, dedicated to Guru Dattatreya. The temple is believed to house the footprints of the sage, making it a sacred spot for devotees. The temple's origins date back several centuries, though the exact time of its construction is not precisely documented.

• Other Temples: In addition to the Dattatreya Temple, there is a temple dedicated to his mother, Anusuya, nearby. The entire region is dotted with smaller shrines and religious structures that add to the spiritual atmosphere of the place.

Astronomical Observatory

Apart from its religious significance, Guru Shikhar is also home to the Mount Abu Observatory, also known as the Guru Shikhar Observatory. This facility, operated by the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, is one of India's leading astronomical observatories. Established in the 1970s, the observatory is equipped with a high-powered telescope used for infrared and optical observations of celestial objects.
